David CarsonDavid Carson was born 8th September 1952 in Texas in the United States. He is still alive today and he lives in New York. Carson studied sociology at the San Diego State University, Carson graduated in 1977. He is also a professional surfer.

In 1980 he had a look into graphic design through a summer school as he was a teacher up till 1987. He also attended a three week graphic course in Switzerland. This is where he found his imnfluence Hans-Rudelf Lutz. He went onto be an art director of Transworld skateboarding.

In 1988 Carson moved to Boston where he became an art director of a musician magazine. The year after this he moves back to the west cpast where he hleped launch a beach cultural magazine. He also designed for the 'New York Times' an'Ray Gun' but he left in 1995. Carson was also know for designing logos such as Pepsi, Nike, Levi, Microsoft, Budwiser and Giorgo Armani.

  • The image looks like a silhouette but with a hint a brown within the black

  • The text follows the shape of the image

  • Carson use's different sizes of text

  • Text seems to be going down in size with the larger text
The letter D seems to have an odd shape at the end which I think makes it stand out
It looks like he could have produced the text using mono printing as you can see patches of black around this design

I think this design stands out because of the use of different text sizewhich follows the image. This makes the text look like it is in the background and the image os in the foreground.

  • This looks like it could be an advertisement for Nike as it has an image of the Nike logo

  • It also has a image of a famous tennis player

  • He use's a image of a trainer which I think makes it look like it is advertising

  • The text is going down at an angle

  • Carson use's capital letters

  • He also use's different sized text

  • The text and the image of the trainer forms a question mark
This is quiet a simple design as Carson has only used a few very small image and a build up og text which produces a question mark.

  • This is the cover of RayGun
  • Carson use's large text and works down in size
  • It has a small image down at the bottom with the barcode above it
  • The text looks like it has been produced by hand as it is not very neat
  • Some of the text has only got the outline
  • The issue number is in light blue which makes it stand out
This is a very simple design, most of the design is the textas that is the main part of it. It works down to a very small image which I think the text draws you down to the image.

Neville Brody

Neville Brody was born 23rd April 1957 in Southgate, London and he still alive today. At school Brody  studied A level art, he went onto do a Fine art foundation then onto a course at Hornsey college of art. In the late sixties he went to Middlesex University. He went onto study at the London college of Printing, this is where he started his three year graphics B.A.  Brody started out designing posters while he studied at London college of printing. He was throw out of college as he put the queens head side wards on a postage stamp design.
He worked for an independent record label called ‘Fetish’, this is how he was know for album covers.
‘The Face’ magazine was a magazine that Brody was an art director  from 1981 to 1986. Brody’s designs where classed as post modern designs.
He also designed font for ‘The Times’ newspaper.

Neville Brody work

This is one of the front covers of  'The Face'  magazine, issue one. This was produced in 1980.
  • He uses a few colours for the text, I think he uses these to make it stand out from the photograph
  • Brody uses different sizes of fonts
  • It has a text box for the title which has a two different colours
  • He uses the use of symbol text within the title.
I think this is quiet a simple magazine cover design but very effective for the time but I personal think it would not interest people as much these days as there is a lot more changing within magazine covers, but I do think it would as it is simple compared to the very complexed designs today.

This is one of Brody's album covers, this was for Desmond Dekker and his Black and Dekker album. This was produced in 1980.
  • It looks to have been drawn of a person, the drawing has contrasing tones
  • Uses a lot of dark colours
  • The image has a white outlin that fades into blue
  • simple red text which has been linked to the edge of the album civer by the lines used
  • simple
I find this interesting because of the style of drawing because it has a definite outline and the very contrasting tones used which I think makes it stand out soo much. I think most designs that are drawn like this are produced in a subtle way.

This is a book cover design which was produced in 1986.
  • a mixture of colour within the background
  • image is a drawing
  • black and white image stands out on the background
  • the the logo of publisher is larger
  • emphasis on the word city in the title by the use of a large section of blue
  • different style of font for each word of the title
  • different sizes of text
Brody has a lot going on within this book cover as he has useda combination of colour and black and white which I think makes it stand out even more. I found how he had used different styles of text for the title interesting as it was an obvious change because of colour and size which I thought he was trying to add emphasis to the words to  give away with the story line.

        Saul Bass

Saul Bass was born 8th May 1920 in New York, he was an American designer and filmmaker, motion pictures. Bass studied at the Art Students League in New York, he also studied as Brooklyn college. Bass started out as a freelance designer in New York. After this he moved to Los Angeles where he set up in his own design practice. Film advertising was what he started out designing in the late 1940’s and in the mid 1950’s he designed titles.
In 1954 Otto Preminger was a movie director who hired Bass to create film posters. One of his designs was for the film ’ The Man With The Golden Arm’, which was completed in 1987. Some of the film posters he designed, he also designed the soundtrack covers. He also worked with Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese.
 Bass died 25th April 1996 aged 75.

      Saul Bass's work

'The Man With The Golden Arm'
This was desinged in  1955, this was not the only poster design he produced. Most of the other designs did not have images of of the actors.
  • This design has an image of the actors such as Frank Sinatra but the images look like coloured negatives.
  • It looks like it has been hand cut as the lines look uneven.
  • Bass has used geometric shapes.
  • It is a simple desing.
  • It is also bold.
I quiet like this design as it is simple but effective. I think it stands out because of the use of contrasting colours and the arm coming down the centre of the title.
This is my own copy of this poster design, for this I have cut out coloured paper for the shapes, text and image. I think it was quiet successful as you can see the bold, bright colours and the hand cut style but I think the text was not as successful as some of it is not very clear. I found the text was hard as it is very small which makes it hard to cut. I also found that it was also very hard to fit in as it is slightly bigger to Bass's asI need to be to allow me to cut it. I think it would be better to cut some of it out like the names of the actors and the title but the rest of the text I think I could have used a stencil and fine liner.

I have used this style to produce a film poster of a film that I know. For this I have chosen 'From Hell'. As it is about Jack the Ripper and how he lurde prostitutes in I have concentrate on this, as in this film it shows Jack the Ripper using grapes and wine as at this time they were classed as luxuries. I have used this to produce a silhouette of a wine bottle with wine dripping down the bottle and a small bunch of grapes. I have decided to have the wine coming from the bottle as on the original poster it has a setion within it like the shape am using that shows a silhouette of Jack the Ripper in the streets of London. As you can see I have used different colours for each silhouette, I have done this so it can contain some of the bold and bright colours but still have that sense of horror.
I think this has been quiet successful as you can see the style within it but it still has the theme of the film within it. I found cutting my figure of Jack the Ripper hard as it is on a small scale, if I was to do this again I think I would consider a larger sized paper as this is only A4 which makes it harder to cut small sections out.

'Vertigo' is another film poster that Bass designed, this was designed for Alfred Hitchcock. This was designed in 1958. He also designed the credits for this film.
  • He has used the the spirals which links in with one of the symptoms of vertigo which is dizziness.
  • He has the cut out look for the text.
  • He has used contrasting colours as the black stands out from the red as the red is very bright.
  • It looks like the figure of the women is falling which also links with vertigo as vertigo is a balance disorder.
I like how Bass has link the meaning of veritgo in with his poster design as it really shows what the film is about. I think this looks quiet a simple design but I think this makes it successful.

This is a 'West Side Story' poster, this was designed in1961.
  • This film is a musical that is based on Romeo and Juliet and I think Bass has shown this with the use of silhouettes  dancing on a balcony, looking at each other.
  • The text is a lot bolder compared to his other design, I think this has a mono print effect as it has patches where there you can see the background colour coming through.
  • He has used contrasting colours.
  • He has used the silhouettes between the text at the top but in black.
  • The infomation has been produced in very small text, I think he did this to make the title stand out.
I think Bass has used a good technique with the larger title as your eye is automatically drawn to it. I think this is also be because of the use of contrasting colours as the black stands out on the red background.
